Taking payment for products (making sales 3)

If you have selected / scanned the products you wish to sell, you now have your sales listed on screen similar to this –

When all items have been input into the till, you simply select the payment method from the choices in the bottom right hand corner. Typically this will be cash, or card if you have a card reader for accepting payment that way.

  • Customer paying cash for goods totalling £9.49
  • Press “Cash” button in the “tender” panel bottom right
  • If the customer gives you £9.49 exactly, then hit Exact, and the till drawer will open for you to put the money in
  • Say the customer offers you a £10 note, after you press Cash, press the button £10, till will say in the top right corner Cash £10, underneath, Change £0.51.

  • Press the Enter button on the till, a receipt will print and the till drawer will open for you to put the £10 in and give £0.51 change
  • Details of the transaction will remain on the screen, until the next sale is made
  • If the amount the customer tenders is not on a button, e.g. customer offers £15 for £12 worth of goods, after pressing Cash you can press £10 then £5 to total £15, till will calculate £3 change
  • You can also type in the amount offered, e.g. customer gives you 60p for a 50p item, you would have to press cash, type in 0.60, and the till would advise 10p change

Payment by card

The principles above apply. When all the goods are on the screen, Press the Card button. Amount will be Exact in every case so the only choice then will be Exact.

The cash drawer may open, or not, for card sales. This is easily customisable and usually set for you when the till is installed.

If you are equipped to take payment by card, you will have a separate card reader / terminal provided by a third party, and the actual payment from the customer is processed through that. By pressing Card on the Till you are just telling the system the customer is paying by card, so that at the end of the day it does not expect there to be cash in the till for it.

Some installations of tengoPOS tills include Card payment integration with the card reader. You will be told if this is the case. Pressing Card on the till in this case automatically transfers details of the sale (amount) to the card reader. The customer still puts their card into it and enters their PIN for authorisation.

Cash and Card?

  1. £50 sale
  2. Customer wants to pay £20 cash £30 card.
  3. Press Cash, key in amount or press the £20 button, press enter
  4. The till knows the amount is not paid in full, so the amount owing in the top right reduces to £30
  5. Press Card, Exact
  6. Receipt is printed showing payment  methods, proceed to take 330 payment from the card using  the card reader terminal

Customer Unable to proceed with a sale

If the customer finds they do not have enough cash for all the items, or card is declined –  a line/s can be removed by pressing on it so it highlights in green, then press Remove Line. The total to pay displayed top right is reduced.

By default, Remove Line will “reverse” the last item entered, so if there are are a number of lines and you only want to remove one, press it to highlight in green.

Remove All removes all the lines input

Cancel (Reject all changes) has a similar effect in this instance, all lines are removed and you are ready to move on to the next customer.
